new Delhi. Sant Kesavananda Bharati, who gave the principle of the basic structure of the constitution, died in Kerala on Sunday at the age of 79. Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Vice President Venkaiah Naidu expressed condolences on his death. Prime Minister Modi said that Sant Keshavanand will continue to inspire many generations.
The Prime Minister tweeted, “We will always remember Pujya Kesavanand Bharti Ji for his community service and his efforts to empower the exploited. He was deeply attached to the country’s constitution and rich culture. He will continue to inspire generations. om Shanti.”

In 1973, Kesavanand Bharti challenged the Kerala Land Reform Act. While hearing this petition, the Supreme Court gave the principle of basic structure of the Constitution. The said decision was given by the largest bench of the Supreme Court which consisted of 13 justices. The famous case of Keshavanand Bharti vs State of Kerala was heard for a total of 68 days.
Vice President M Venkaiah Naidu condoled the death of Saint Kesavananda Bharati, saying, “Kesavananda Bharati Swamiji, a saint of the Edenir Math, was a rare combination of philosopher, classical singer and cultural icon.”
