Mumbai: Bollywood superstar Akshay Kumar on Friday, on the occasion of World Menstrual Day Cleanliness Day, urged everyone to break the taboo related to menstruation. Akshay cited his film Padman (2018), which came out in the year 2018, to make his point on the issue. The actor, who is competing with Akshay Kumar and John Abraham in the field of fitness and action, is learning martial arts from the age of 3
Directed by R Balki, the film was inspired by the life of entrepreneur Arunachalam Muruganatham, who lives in a small town in Tamil Nadu, who invented low-cost sanitary napkins to create awareness in rural areas. Radhika Apte and Sonam Kapoor also played important roles in the film.
Today is World Menstrual Hygeine day. Doing #Padman in 2018 opened my eyes to what women go through because of stigma and lack of basic sanitary facilities. Thankfully things are improving by the year. @mrsfunnybones and I will forever stay with the cause. #BreakTheTaboo pic.twitter.com/Dex1Ap0anv

Akshay tweeted on Twitter, tagging his wife and one of the film’s makers Twinkle Khanna, “Today is World Menstrual Hygiene Day. Doing hashtagpadman in the year 2018 opened my eyes to what women do not suffer due to old thinking and lack of basic sanitation facilities. Thankfully, they are improving now and I will always work in this direction. Hashtagbreedtaboo. “
