During Sambhaji’s reign, the Mughals were staunch enemies of the Marathas. After which, in January 1689, the Mughal forces captured and held Sambhaji captive. Aurangzeb told him to surrender all the forts and treasures and finally to convert to Islam. But Sambhaji refused to do so and as a result he was painfully murdered.
