Eating avocado keeps your stomach healthy, says study

New Delhi: You must have heard about the healing properties of avocados and dieticians suggest including avocado in your eating habit.

Now a study has found that including avocado in your daily diet helps you improve gut health because the fruit is rich in dietary fiber and monounsaturated fat. It keeps you healthy by affecting the microbes in the gastrointestinal system.

Sharon Thompson, a graduate student in Nutrition Sciences in the Division of I and U, the lead author, published in the Journal of Nutrition, said, “We know that eating avocado helps you feel full and reduces the amount of cholesterol in the blood, But we have not known how it affects gut microbes, and metabolites producing microbes. “

Researchers found that people who eat avocados every day as part of a meal have a plethora of gut microbes, which break down fiber and metabolize in the intestines that support gut health. According to the study, their microbial diversity was also higher than those who did not receive avocado food.

Thompson stated, “Avocado intake reduces bile acids and increases short-chain fatty acids. These changes correlate with beneficial health outcomes. “

A medium avocado provides about 12 grams of fiber, which goes a long way toward meeting the recommended amount of 28 to 34 grams of fiber per day.

Avocado is also an energy-dense food, nutrient-dense, and contains important micronutrients that Americans do not eat in sufficient amounts, such as potassium and fiber.

“It is just a very well packed fruit that contains nutrients that are important for health. Our work shows that we can add health benefits to that list, ”said Hölscher.
