In ancient times, there was a Danavir king named Mandhata on the banks of the river Narmada. He was an ardent devotee of Lord Vishnu. Once the king was engulfed in austere penance under a tree in the forest. Then a wild bear attacked them and chewed their leg. The king absorbed in penance prayed to Vishnu to get rid of this crisis without protesting. Vishnu appeared and cut the head of the Sudarshan Chakra bear, but by then the bear had chewed the king’s feet. Seeing the groaning king in pain, Vishnu said, “Do not be distracted, Ekadashi of Krishna Paksha of Vaishakh month, known as Varuthini Ekadashi, on that day you should worship my Varaha form while fasting.” Your feet will be the same as before. Whatever the bear has done to you, it is the result of the sins of your past life. By this Varuthini Ekadashi fast you will get freedom from all sins. King Mandhata did the same. As soon as he passed the fast, he became strong as before.
