In ancient times there was a godly king named Mahidhwaj. The people in his kingdom were very happy and prosperous. But the king’s younger brother Vajradhwaj was very jealous of the elder brother Mahidhwaj. One day, Vajradhwaj killed his elder brother and buried his body under a peepal tree in the forest. Due to the untimely death of Mahidhwaj, his soul became a phantom and started living on Peepal. Whoever passed through that route, the king’s spirit troubled him. One day a sage was passing through the same path, he saw the ghost with his tapobal and asked him the reason for becoming a ghost. After getting all the information, the sage brought down the spirit of the king from the peepal tree and preached the knowledge of the afterlife. In order to free the king from the phantom vagina, the sage himself kept a fast on Apara Ekadashi and on the completion of the fast on the day of Dwadashi, gave the virtue of the fast to the phantom.
